The Mourinho Era: Real Madrid Inside

When people talk about Jose 'the special one' Mourinho's career as a coach, they don't talk much about his tenure for Real Madrid. But he had one of the best seasons as a coach with Real Madrid: Today we will look at 'The Mourinho Era'

Mourinho had just arrived from the treble winning Inter Milan and everyone had high expectations against a Barcelona side which is considered to be one of the best sides ever to play.

 SEASON(10/11)

Laliga: In his first season, he was up against Pep Guardiola's Barcelona in the league. Real Madrid fought hard till the end for the title but ended up on the 2nd place only four points behind FC Barcelona. Cristiano Ronaldo was Real Madrid's top scorer with 40 goals followed by Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain.

UCL: Mourinho's side qualified for the RO16 remaining on top of the group and unbeaten with 5 wins and 1 draw in a group having teams like AC Milan and Ajax. In the RO16, they were against Lyon and they won with an aggregate score of 4-1 over the both legs. In the Quarter Finals, they drew against Tottenham Hotspurs and they won with an aggregate score of 5-0 over the both legs. In Semi-finals they were against their biggest rivals and probably the greatest team in the world that time, FC Barcelona, over the course of two legs, Real Madrid lost against them with aggregate score of 1-3 and Barcelona advanced to the final and eventually won the Champions League.

Copa Del Rey: This was the only trophy that Madrid won in that season, while winning against teams like Atletico Madrid in the Quarter-Final, Sevilla in the Semi-finals, and Barcelona in the Finals with the iconic Ronaldo's header from the Di Maria's cross in the extra time.

For this Real Madrid team, it was a pretty good season, while they were really close in Laliga title race and also reached Semi-finals in UCL, they managed to win one trophy. This really boosted players confidence and then came one of the most iconic Laliga season ever.

SEASON 11/12

Laliga:In his second season at Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho led the team to win the Laliga title with a record 100 points and became the first team to achieve this feat. Real Madrid scored 121 goals in that league campaign of 38 games averaging 3.18 goals per game. They had a goal difference of 89. No team has had a higher GD or has scored more goals than Real Madrid 11/12. Real Madrid's top scorers were: 1. Cristiano Ronaldo- 46 goals, 2. Gonzalo Higuain- 22 goals, 3. Karim Benzema- 21 goals. Real Madrid finished was 9 points ahead of Barcelona in this historic league campaign.

UCL: Real Madrid topped their group with perfect 18 points out of 6 games winning all the games. In the RO16 they were against CSKA Moscow and they won with an aggregate score of 5-2 over the legs. In the Quarter-Final, they were against APOEL and they won with an aggregate score of 8-2 over the both legs and they were looking in a great form. But in the Semi-finals they were against Bayern Munich and with an aggregate score of 3-3 Real Madrid lost on penalties.

Copa Del Rey: Real Madrid had an underwhelming performance in CDR as they were out in Quarter-Finals against Barcelona with an aggregate score of 3-4.

SEASON 12/13

This was an underwhelming season Real Madrid as they finished second in Laliga behind Barcelona by 15 points, got knocked out in Champions League against Dortmund in Semi-finals due to Robert Lewandowski's poker in the first leg, and lost to Atletico Madrid in CDR final. The only trophy Real Madrid won was supercopa against Barcelona with an aggregate score of 4-4 (away goals).

Although Real Madrid won only 3 trophies over the span of 3 years with Jose Mourinho, he laid a base for the upcoming success of Real Madrid with La Decima, the three-peat UCL winning team, and much more.

Jose Mourinho's 11/12 Madrid team will go down as one of the most iconic teams to ever play. They were against the greatest Barcelona side under Pep Guardiola and they gave them really tough challenge as a rival.
